This social skills group has been a critical element in our son's development and education. He not only takes away the lessons in social thinking and increased awareness of social norms and expectations, but the hidden benefit has been that over time, he has come to view this as a peer support group as well. We see him applying the lessons they address in group in his daily life, and because of that he has gained much confidence.
I think what is most helpful to my son is being able to understand that he is not the only person who struggles with a communication disorder. The group he is in is well matched, and the boys share common experiences with regard to the difficulties they face relating to others on a daily basis. Their common ground is a strong foundation which enables him to explore and discuss things that are not topics he could share with more typical students at school. Here, his challenges are understood and he is accepted.
